Background

Hyundai Motor Group is strengthening its U.S. expansion as it targets further gains in sales and market share. The South Korean automaker plans to increase local production, expand its vehicle range and invest heavily in the country as it sees the U.S. as a key market for global growth.

The group, which includes Hyundai, Kia and Genesis, increased its U.S. market share from 8.4% in 2020 to 11.2% last year. It constituted 11.8% during the first half of 2026 and became the fourth largest automaker in the U.S. on the basis of sales. The firm has seen a 50% increase in its sales from 2020.

Hyundai is investing $26 billion in the U.S. through 2028. Its Georgia manufacturing plant is central to the plan and could increase annual production capacity from 500,000 vehicles to 700,000-800,000 vehicles. The company wants to produce at least 80% of the vehicles it sells in the U.S. domestically by the end of this decade, compared with about 40% in 2024.

Chief Executive José Muñoz said the company is accelerating its localisation strategy as tariffs increase the need for U.S.-based production. Hyundai and Kia have both grown U.S. sales by about 45% since 2020.

The group also plans more than 100 vehicle launches and updates across Hyundai and Genesis by 2030, including 58 in North America. It will expand electrified models and explore pickup trucks and larger SUVs.

Genesis is also gaining ground in the luxury segment. Its new GV90 flagship SUV is expected to strengthen the brand’s position as Hyundai targets continued growth across different price categories in America.
