Rooted in values where principles outweighed possessions, Swati Thakur learned early on that patience and sincerity form the foundation of true dignity. What began as a young woman’s pursuit of independence at eighteen blossomed into an inspiring journey across India’s luxury hospitality landscape.

She began her career with The Oberoi Group and built her foundation on humility, precision, and the art of service that goes beyond manuals. Fourteen wonderful years at The Indian Hotels Company Limited (Taj Hotels) evolved her leadership style, which is based on empathy, sincerity, and human connection. Her laurels, including numerous national hospitality honors, serve as silent testaments to her dedication and elegance under pressure.

Today, as Hotel Manager at The Leela Palaces, Hotels, and Resorts, she is following the same idea which has influenced her life: hospitality is not about grandeur but about creating moments that touch hearts. Her method combines strategic vision and emotional intelligence to create experiences which feel intensely personal. Beyond operations and accolades, Swati is the modern face of Indian luxury, founded on compassion, driven by purpose, and guided by the notion that true excellence begins with the human spirit.

The Foundation: Where Simplicity Meets Strength

Swati grew up in a home where values held greater meaning than abundance. With three siblings, devoted parents, and a grandmother whose quiet strength shaped their early years, she learned that true richness lies in togetherness, not material things. Though her world was sheltered, her curiosity knew no bounds-  she dreamed vividly, felt deeply, and was endlessly fascinated by people, places, and their stories.

“My early years taught me that dignity lies in perseverance. No work, however small, is ever ordinary when done with heart,” she reflects.

She began working at eighteen, discovering that life’s best education doesn’t always come from classrooms. Over the years, she completed her Graduation and MBA in Hospitality and now pursues a master’s in psychology. Yet she maintains that her greatest degree remains life itself, every encounter, every challenge, and every new beginning has shaped who she has become.

Travel became her constant teacher, adding new layers of perspective with each journey. She explored countries not as a tourist but as a learner, observing cultures, art, and human behavior. Creativity came to her through dance, music, and movement. Having explored both Indian and Western dance forms, she views it as an expression of emotion and freedom, a parallel to how she approaches hospitality.

Foundations of Luxury and Grace

Early rejections from aviation careers gently redirected Swati towards what would become her true calling. She joined The Oberoi Group as a trainee, learning from the ground up. The work culture shaped her profoundly: precision, humility, and the art of service beyond a script became her foundation. These three years became more than professional training—they served as a finishing school in life itself.

Fourteen Transformative Years

Swati’s journey with The Indian Hotels Company Limited (Taj Hotels) spanned fourteen transformative years. Rising from team member to Operations Manager, she discovered that hospitality revolves around people, not structures. The laughter of a guest, the pride in a colleague’s eyes, the power of handwritten notes became her true motivators.

During this period, she earned significant recognition. In 2019, she received the Best Front Office Manager of the Year award at the BW Hotelier Hospitality Awards, reaffirming her belief that passion and sincerity never go unnoticed.

Then came 2021 and the Front Office Manager of the Year (Luxury to Upper Upscale) honor at the Hotelier India Awards. This recognition symbolized not just operational excellence but the strength of a team that led with grace, empathy, and consistency through unprecedented times.

Leadership Through Challenging Times

Swati’s professional journey has been marked by her ability to navigate complex and challenging situations with unwavering resolve and emotional intelligence. Her leadership philosophy centers empathy before efficiency, safety before speed, and humanity before hierarchy. During periods of uncertainty, she has demonstrated that true leadership means creating stability for others while adapting to rapidly changing circumstances.

She focuses on building resilient teams that can maintain excellence regardless of external pressures. Her approach emphasizes collective spirit and adaptability values that enable organizations to not just survive challenges but emerge stronger. This experience taught her that resilience and compassion remain the most enduring currencies in both business and life, shaping her into a leader who prioritizes people while delivering operational excellence.

The Leela Palace: Leading True Indian Luxury

With nearly two decades in hospitality already behind her, Swati’s most significant leap came with The Leela Palace Jaipur, her first move away from home, comfort, and familiarity. Leading a palace hotel that embodies True Indian Luxury proved both humbling and empowering.

She sees the property’s success as a reflection of what belief, teamwork, and sincerity can create together. Her approach to business blends heart with strategy, creating impact while staying rooted in authenticity. She thrives in environments where teams debate ideas, celebrate collaboration, and treat excellence as non-negotiable.

Key Initiatives at The Leela Palace Jaipur

Under Swati’s leadership, The Leela Palace Jaipur embraced a vision that balances luxury with responsibility. Her initiatives focus on three core pillars:

Authenticity: She champions experiences that celebrate Jaipur’s rich cultural heritage while delivering contemporary luxury. Every guest interaction is designed to tell the story of Rajasthan’s royal legacy through genuine, personalized service that goes beyond the expected.

Cultural Preservation: She believes luxury hospitality has a responsibility to preserve and promote local culture. She is fostering partnerships with local artisans and cultural practitioners, ensuring that the property serves as a living ambassador of Rajasthani traditions, from art and music to culinary heritage.

Sustainability: Recognizing that true luxury must be conscious, she advocates for sustainable practices that minimize environmental impact while maximizing guest satisfaction. From resource management to supporting local communities, her approach demonstrates that premium hospitality and environmental stewardship can coexist harmoniously.

“The world of luxury is evolving. The future belongs to brands that are human, conscious, and emotionally intelligent. We’re not just about rooms and revenues, we’re about emotions, experiences, and the ability to make someone feel valued,” she observes.

Daily Practice: Balancing Excellence with Well-Being

Hospitality operates twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. Choosing this path means choosing a life of service, curating experiences for others, making their celebrations and milestones extraordinary. That privilege demands tremendous energy, time, and emotional presence.

Embracing Aujasya by The Leela

Swati has become a passionate advocate for Aujasya, The Leela’s signature wellness philosophy that draws from ancient Indian wisdom to promote holistic well-being. Aujasya meaning “vitality” or “life force” in Sanskrit, encompasses physical, mental, and spiritual wellness through practices rooted in Ayurveda, yoga, and mindfulness.

She doesn’t just recommend Aujasya to guests; she practices it herself daily, making it an integral part of her routine. Understanding that sustaining excellence requires taking care of the person behind the professional, she consciously plans her days, weeks, and months not just around meetings or goals, but around moments of pause.

Yoga has become her daily anchor through Aujasya practices, strengthening not only her body but also her focus and patience. She keeps her diet simple and mindful, following Ayurvedic principles that emphasize balance, particularly important when working in hotels means being surrounded by indulgence at every corner.

Mental well-being receives equal priority through Aujasya’s mindfulness practices. She dedicates time to read, reflect, and reset, whether through travel, music, or dance. These creative expressions help her reconnect with herself, which in turn allows her to show up stronger for her teams and guests.

As a leader, she actively encourages her team to embrace Aujasya principles. She reminds them that success isn’t measured by exhaustion, but by endurance, by how well they sustain their passion without burning out. Creating a culture where people feel valued not only for what they deliver but also for who they are matters deeply to her. The Aujasya philosophy has become a cornerstone of this culture, promoting wellness as essential to both personal fulfillment and professional excellence.

The Driving Force: Empathy as Native Language

Empathy has always been Swati’s native language. Long before she learned the vocabulary of leadership or the structure of business, she understood the emotion behind them, the ability to feel, to listen, to truly see people.

What drives her daily is the simple yet profound joy of making things better for guests, her team, and the spaces she serves. In hospitality, every interaction holds a story. A kind word at the right moment, a detail remembered, a gesture that transforms an ordinary day into a memory these fuel her.

She finds herself moved by people through their resilience, their differences, their shared desire to belong. Watching individuals from diverse backgrounds come together in harmony to create experiences that touch lives reminds her why she chose this path.

“Hospitality is not just a career; it is a calling. It’s where purpose meets emotion, where service becomes art. My passion is to keep nurturing to inspire confidence, dignity, and kindness in others so that they, too, find meaning in what they do,” she says.

Leadership Philosophy: The Art of Listening

Swati considers herself a student of leadership, constantly learning through people, challenges, and changing times. She believes that no two individuals are the same, every person comes from a different background, mindset, and emotional rhythm. Recognizing and respecting that diversity makes leadership human and effective.

Situational leadership becomes essential in her view. No single formula fits all, what works for one person or circumstance may not for another. The true skill lies in reading the room, sensing the energy, and adapting one’s style with empathy and clarity.

She identifies listening truly as one of the most underrated yet powerful traits of great leadership. It builds trust faster than any directive can. It allows leaders to understand before responding, to connect before correcting.

“Leadership is not about having all the answers. It’s about creating an environment where people feel safe to share ideas, make mistakes, and grow,” she emphasizes.

The Strength in Showing Up

If Swati had to define her strength in one phrase, it would be never giving up. No matter how difficult the circumstances or how many times life tested her, she has chosen to show up every single day. Starting work at a very young age taught her what resilience truly means: perseverance isn’t about fighting constantly, but about showing up consistently, with faith in oneself.

Optimism, not the kind that ignores reality, but one rooted in hope and clarity which has carried her through challenges. She has never believed that any setback could define her. Every challenge has been a doorway to learning, met with grace and courage.

As for weaknesses, she reflects that starting work so young made her intensely focused, perhaps too early. For years, she blurred the lines between work and life, believing they were one and the same. Over time, she realized that work is part of life, not life itself. Learning to pause, to celebrate, and to embrace moments of joy has been her greatest evolution.

“Success is not about how much we achieve, but how well we live while achieving it,” she shares.

The Mantra: Ambitiously Alive

Swati’s mantra for growth and success centers on staying ambitiously alive. When rooted in purpose, ambition fuels work, relationships, and inner growth. It keeps one evolving while serving as a reminder to nurture every part of life, not just career.

Her message to aspiring leaders and professionals resonates with hard-earned wisdom: Leadership is not a position but a journey of growth, for yourself and those around you. Keep learning, evolving, and remember that consistency often outweighs perfection. Surround yourself with people who challenge and uplift you and never let go of curiosity.

“True growth isn’t measured by titles or upward movement, but by becoming deeper, kinder, and wiser every day,” she concludes.
