New Delhi, India | 17 July 2026: The Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) has announced the launch of the E-Commerce Council of India (ECCI), a national industry platform established to promote collaboration between businesses, policymakers, technology providers, and other stakeholders involved in India’s digital commerce ecosystem.

The initiative seeks to facilitate structured dialogue, encourage evidence-based policymaking, and support the continued growth of India’s digital commerce sector through research, advocacy, and industry engagement.

Speaking at the launch event, economist Dr. Laveesh Bhandari, the keynote speaker, highlighted the importance of collaborative policymaking as the sector continues to expand.

“The next phase of India’s e-commerce growth will depend not only on innovation but also on meaningful collaboration across the ecosystem. A unified industry perspective can contribute to more informed policy decisions, greater regulatory clarity, and a business environment that encourages sustainable growth while benefiting consumers, sellers, and the wider economy,” he said.

Supporting a Rapidly Expanding Digital Commerce Landscape

According to IAMAI, India’s digital commerce ecosystem has expanded well beyond conventional online retail to include digital marketplaces, service platforms, mobility solutions, travel technology, logistics, supply chains, digital payments, direct-to-consumer (D2C) brands, exporters, cross-border trade, and AI-powered commerce.

As the sector continues to evolve, the association believes there is an increasing need for collaborative engagement among industry participants, government agencies, and academic institutions to help address emerging opportunities and policy considerations while promoting consumer trust and ease of doing business.

The newly formed E-Commerce Council of India aims to serve as a collaborative platform bringing together policymakers, marketplaces, retailers, brands, logistics providers, technology companies, payment solution providers, startups, exporters, MSMEs, researchers, and academic experts.

Among the founding participants are leading digital commerce organizations including Amazon, Flipkart, IndiaMART, ixigo, Uber, Rapido, Shiprocket, eBay, Urban Company, and Meesho.

Key Focus Areas

The Council will work across several strategic areas that influence the future of India’s digital commerce ecosystem, including:

  • Service e-commerce
  • Product e-commerce
  • Cross-border e-commerce and digital trade
  • Logistics, supply chains, and fulfilment
  • Mobility
  • MSME enablement and market access
  • Travel technology
  • Consumer trust, digital payments, and responsible commerce
  • Artificial intelligence, emerging technologies, and future commerce

Through these focus areas, ECCI aims to encourage knowledge sharing, policy discussions, and collaborative initiatives that support long-term sectoral development.

Industry-Government Collaboration

Commenting on the launch, Dr. Subho Ray, President of IAMAI, said the Council has been created to strengthen cooperation between industry and policymakers as digital commerce becomes an increasingly important contributor to India’s economy.

“Digital commerce has become one of the defining pillars of India’s digital economy, transforming the way businesses operate and how consumers access products and services. The E-Commerce Council of India has been established to create a collaborative platform where industry stakeholders can engage with policymakers, contribute research, develop best practices, and participate in discussions that help shape the future of digital commerce in India.”

Future Roadmap

As part of its long-term vision, the Council also plans to organize the Indian E-Commerce Summit (IECS), an annual forum intended to bring together representatives from government, industry, academia, and the global digital commerce community to discuss emerging trends, policy developments, innovation, and the future of digital trade.
