Background-
India’s largest airline IndiGo has appointed seasoned aviation leader Willie Walsh as its new chief executive, marking a strong step forward as the carrier prepares for its next phase of growth and global expansion.
Walsh will join the airline in August after completing his term as director general of the International Air Transport Association. His arrival comes at a time when the aviation sector is changing fast and throwing up new expansion opportunities, giving IndiGo a steady hand at the top.
The appointment follows Pieter Elbers’ departure in March. Since then, co-founder Rahul Bhatia has been leading the airline as interim head, keeping operations stable and running smoothly.
Walsh brings decades of experience in global aviation. He previously led British Airways and played a major role at International Airlines Group, overseeing large-scale operations and steering the business through changing market conditions. He began his career with Aer Lingus, working his way up from pilot to chief executive and building a strong reputation for leadership and operational expertise.
IndiGo chairman Vikram Singh Mehta said Walsh’s deep industry knowledge and leadership track record make him appropriate to guide the airline’s plans.
IndiGo continues to hold a strong position in India’s domestic aviation market, operating a fleet of over 400 aircraft and running thousands of flights each day. Alongside its domestic network, the airline is steadily growing its international presence and improving its premium travel offerings.
With Walsh in charge, IndiGo aims to build on its scale and efficiency while tightening operations and pursuing new growth opportunities across domestic and global markets.
