Tiago H. Falk obtained his BSc in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the Federal University of Pernambuco, Brazil, in 2002. He completed his MSc and PhD at Queen’s University in Canada, specializing in speech quality measurement. After a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Toronto, he joined INRS in 2010 as an Assistant Professor, combining neuro-engineering with telecommunications. Tiago founded the MuSAE Lab, later rebranded as the Multisensory Signal Analysis and Enhancement Lab. Now a Full Professor and Co-Director of the INRS-UQO Joint Research Unit on Cybersecurity, he leads interdisciplinary research projects in AI, signal processing, and multisensory applications.

Tiago H. Falk advises aspiring researchers and professionals in applied AI to focus on understanding the underlying principles rather than relying solely on open-source codes. While tools like LLMs and ChatGPT have democratized research, a solid grasp of machine learning, signal processing, and statistics is essential for success. Falk emphasizes the importance of improving data quality and applying domain knowledge, sharing an example where classical machine learning outperformed large neural networks in predicting nurse burnout.
