Her early educational years flowed smoothly, setting a trajectory that seemed predetermined for success. However, life had different plans, ones that would test her resolve and forge the character that defines her today.

During her secondary school years, her world shifted dramatically when her father lost his banking position. The financial security her family once enjoyed evaporated, forcing difficult decisions. She had to leave one of the region’s premier high schools because the fees became very high. The transition to a more affordable institution meant stepping into an academically weaker environment, a change that could have derailed her dreams entirely. Many would have allowed circumstances to define their limits. Unyime chose differently.

Instead of viewing her situation as a limitation, she transformed it into fuel for an unstoppable determination. She didn’t simply attend the new school; she dominated it academically, graduating with exceptional results that defied external expectations. But academic excellence alone couldn’t pay bills or ease financial pressures. Demonstrating entrepreneurial instincts that would serve her throughout life, she converted school holidays into business opportunities. She launched a small snack-selling venture, generating income that supported her needs while her peers relaxed. These experiences taught her lessons no classroom could provide- resourcefulness, self-reliance, and the understanding that circumstances don’t determine destiny; responses do.

The Academic Journey and Service

Armed with determination and exceptional grades, Unyime pursued higher education at a university, specializing in Medical Biochemistry. The choice reflected common expectations and practical considerations rather than intrinsic passion. She approached her studies with characteristic dedication, earning her degree through focused effort and disciplined work. It was during this period that she discovered her capacity for leadership and service through her involvement with the Nigerian Christian Corpers’ Fellowship during her mandatory one-year National Youth Service Corps program.

Serving as Assistant General Secretary for the entire service year, she demonstrated organizational skills and commitment that foreshadowed her future leadership roles. This position required coordinating activities, managing relationships, and serving a community of young professionals navigating their transition from academic life to professional careers. The experience enriched her understanding of people management and reinforced her natural inclination toward service-oriented leadership, laying critical groundwork for the complex organizational challenges she would later face.

The Pivot to Purpose: Addressing Learning Poverty

Following her service year, Unyime entered the private health sector, taking on marketing responsibilities and leading campaigns for an organization. On paper, the career path aligned perfectly with her academic background. In reality, each day felt increasingly disconnected from her authentic calling. She performed her duties competently, but something essential was missing: the sense of purpose that gives work meaning beyond paychecks and professional advancement.

The realization arrived gradually, built through countless small encounters that collectively revealed her true path. She noticed a pattern in her interactions with children: she would instinctively reach for a book, eager to see how the child engaged with reading. These simple moments opened her eyes to a disturbing reality that many preferred to ignore: numerous children struggled with basic reading comprehension, unable to decode simple texts accessible to their age group.

This observation introduced Unyime to a concept that would define her mission: learning poverty. UNICEF defines it as the inability of a child to read and comprehend simple text by age ten. The widespread nature of this problem struck her deeply, transforming from mere observation into a burden she couldn’t shake. Coupled with a strong spiritual conviction and direction she felt, the path forward crystallized. She needed to do something tangible, something that addressed this fundamental gap in children’s foundational education.

The decision to start a school wasn’t born from careful market analysis or long-term strategic planning. It emerged from necessity, from witnessing a problem too significant to ignore, and from recognizing that she possessed the skills and passion to make a difference. She made a bold move, leaving the health sector behind to pursue educational qualifications that would formalize her calling. Unyime earned a Postgraduate Diploma in Education followed by a Master’s Degree in Educational Administration and Planning, building the theoretical framework to support her practical vision.

Building From Ground Zero

In 2014, Green Pastures Creche & Schools opened its doors to exactly two students. Most people would have viewed this as a failure before starting. Unyime saw it as a beginning, a foundation upon which something meaningful could grow. She understood that transformational change rarely arrives fully formed; it develops gradually through consistent effort, unwavering commitment, and the courage to persist when visible results remain scarce.

The early years tested every ounce of her determination. Resources were severely limited. She lacked the technical knowledge required to run an educational institution effectively. Parents viewed the school skeptically, perceiving it as too small, too new, and too risky for their children’s futures. Potential students slipped away to established institutions that could provide comprehensive educational pathways.

These challenges could have broken someone less committed. For Unyime, they became stepping stones. She approached each obstacle methodically, learning from every setback, adapting strategies, and refusing to compromise on quality despite limited resources. Her breakthrough strategy focused on a specific, measurable outcome that would demonstrate the school’s value: teaching children to read fluently before age five.

This focus on early literacy became her differentiator. As word spread about children mastering reading skills years ahead of typical timelines, skeptical parents began paying attention. The same families who once overlooked Green Pastures started returning, drawn by concrete results they could observe. Parents witnessed transformations in children who previously struggled with basic texts, watching them evolve into confident, fluent readers who approached books with excitement rather than dread.

Unyime’s approach to education transcends conventional teaching methods. She recognizes that reading represents far more than decoding words on pages. She frequently works late hours and invests significant energy in teacher training, but intentionally creates space for what matters beyond work. Unyime prioritizes daily family time, recognizing that authentic leadership includes modelling healthy boundaries and demonstrating that success need not require sacrificing personal relationships.

She also confronts her weaknesses with remarkable honesty. Her love for excellence sometimes leads to overthinking, where her desire for quality results in excessive analysis that slows decision-making. She struggles with delegation, finding it difficult to entrust tasks to others when she fears they might not meet her exacting standards. She acknowledges that accepting mistakes from team members challenges her, though she actively works on building trust and viewing delegation as an opportunity for shared growth rather than potential failure. This self-awareness distinguishes authentic leaders, who commit to continuous growth, recognizing that even weaknesses serve as learning opportunities.

Recognition and Growing Influence

Unyime’s contributions haven’t gone unnoticed. In 2022, Education Influence honoured her as a Global Education Influencer, welcoming her into a network of educators making significant impacts worldwide. This recognition validated her approach and expanded her platform for advocacy.

In December 2024, K12 Digest, an independent international educational platform, invited her to contribute her expertise. She authored an article titled “How Character Building Through Education Can Impact the Future,” which reached educators across continents. May 2025 marked another milestone when she accepted the position of Operations Manager at The Victorian Entrepreneurial Academy, an online institution which empowers women with digital skills. Within months of joining this remote role, she earned two prestigious awards: the Empowerment Champion Award and the Leadership Award, recognizing her outstanding contributions and exemplary leadership in a new context.

The Philosophy and Legacy Being Shaped

Unyime articulates a leadership philosophy rooted in service rather than position. She emphasizes that authentic leadership begins internally, in the heart’s commitment level. Without deep purpose anchoring decisions and actions, the inevitable pressures and tests accompanying leadership positions will overwhelm even the most talented individuals. She advocates for leaders who prioritize others’ needs, stressing that effective leaders need patience, tolerance to embrace diversity, and respect to build genuine trust.
